About Hypnosis for Hot Flashes
|
The MBMR is conducting a research study, supported by Baylor University and the National Institutes of Health to evaluate the effects of an innovative use of hypnosis treatment to reduce hot flashes in postmenopausal women. The National Institutes of Health provides funding to cover some or all of the costs of conducting this research. The purpose of this research study is to determine how useful hypnosis is in controlling hot flashes in comparison to another mind-body intervention. A second purpose is to determine the extent to which a person’s ability to be hypnotized is related to the success of the hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is a mind-body therapy that may be defined as a deeply relaxed state involving mental imagery.Hypnosis may reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes, by enhancing coolness and comfort, reducing anxiety, decreasing stress, and improving sleep patterns. Participants complete a series of questionnaires, attend weekly sessions for 6 weeks, and then return for a 12 week follow up. Participants may be asked to wear a device measuring hot flashes for a 24 hour period and provide saliva samples.
